About COMPASS

Organizational Overview and History

COMPASS is primarily a volunteer consulting alliance composed of local MBA alumni from Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Wharton Business School , Dartmouth 's Tuck School of Business and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. COMPASS provides skills-based volunteer consulting to Washington DC Area nonprofits. Our members have been working on pro bono consulting projects in the DC area since 2001 and our alliance was formalized in 2003.

We work closely with the leadership of nonprofits addressing their strategic needs. Our volunteer consulting teams have worked with a wide variety of nonprofit clients in sectors including youth and family services, emergency relief, education, the arts, and the environment, among others. COMPASS offers our clients four main areas of consulting services: strategic alignment, board development, funding strategy and executive coaching.

Through our alliance, dozens of area alumni have donated their time and expertise to make DC a better community. We bring highly valuable business skills to organizations that can really use them. During these times when the nonprofit sector is increasingly strained by limited resources, COMPASS consulting teams help our clients make the best use of their assets to achieve their goals.

The COMPASS mission is to:

  • Increase the capacity of non-profit organizations in the Greater DC community
  • Provide MBA graduates from allied business schools as well as selected business professionals with meaningful, skills-based volunteering and networking opportunities
  • Foster a spirit of volunteerism throughout the region’s business community
